School Uniform

School uniform is an important part of our rules at Penyrheol Comprehensive School. We have discussed and agreed with Student Voice that our uniform must meet four key principles. It must be:

  • Smart
  • Practical
  • Comfortable
  • Affordable.

The reasons for these principles and why uniform is important to us are because:

  • The impressions we give (including first impressions) of ourselves as individuals and of our school to visitors and other members of the community are partly based on what we wear.
  • Pupils walk a reasonable distance and undertake many varied activities during a typical school day. Our uniform needs to be able to cope with the demands being made upon it.
  • Uniform has nothing to do with fashion. Pupils are able to wear what they like outside of school within the boundaries set by their parents. In school we don’t want a fashion parade!
  • Equality is important and is partly evidenced and nurtured by what we wear. This is why we want a uniform that is affordable for all and doesn’t include unnecessary and expensive items.
  • Having all pupils dressed in a similar way saves time when getting ready for school (there’s no, ‘What should I wear today?’) and fosters a sense of identity and belonging to our school community. We hope that pupils can be proud of our school and demonstrate that through wearing our uniform.

Our school uniform requirements are set out clearly in our Prospectus and on our website. The purpose of this document is to make our expectations clear by providing images of what is and what is not acceptable. If a parent/pupil is out shopping for uniform and there is any doubt as to whether or not an item will be acceptable, it almost certainly won’t be!
